In many cases it can be rather difficult to obtain or transfer customized ringtones to or from one’s mobile phone. In some cases, transfer of data directly from a personal computer to the phone may not even be possible! The only option available for these individuals is to download a file using their provider’s network, which is often quite a costly service! Fortunately, iPhone owners need not concern themselves with the possibility of such hindrances. Indeed, Apple has taken the time to make their product friendly to this kind of customization. In fact, it is possible to make a free ringtone and transfer it to the iPhone using the official iTunes software! No external software is necessary whatsoever.

When the song or audio file intended to be used as a ringtone has been selected, it should be opened within iTunes and played. The whole song is not going to play in the time it takes the phone to ring, so a portion of it is used. This portion must be selected by means of inputting the start and end time of the clip; these should be written down as the song is played in iTunes. It can be no longer than 40 seconds. The two time values can be entered within the “Options” tab within the song’s “Info” menu. Selecting OK confirms the change, and the song will now play only within the designated time period. If the song is in the mp3 format, it should first be converted to the “m4a” type before the next step. This can be accomplished using iTunes itself as well.

One final change must be applied before the file is recognized as a ringtone by the iTunes software. The file must be located using the file manager program of either Windows or Mac OS, whichever is being used. Once found, its extension should be changed to “.m4r”. When it is transferred to the iPhone within iTunes, it will automatically be filed under the “Ringtones” category. You may need to restart the program before the change is recognized in some instances. Once the transfer is complete, the tone will be ready to use immediately. This process can be used on any compatible file, regardless of its content. Sounds and quotes can be used in place of music if one so desires.
